Syracuse falls to Virginia, 6-1, in 1st ACC match of 2017

Syracuse (1-4, 0-1 Atlantic Coast) fell 6-1 at Virginia (2-2, 2-0) Saturday in its first conference match of the season.

The doubles point was within reach for the Orange when Anna Shkudun and Maria Tritou completed their doubles match, winning 6-3. The No. 10 doubles pair in the country, Gabriela Knutson and Valeria Salazar, dropped their doubles match, 7-5. In third doubles, Dina Hegab and Miranda Ramirez lost 7-6, dropping the tiebreak to concede the doubles point to the Cavaliers.

Three singles matches ended in straight sets in favor of the Cavaliers, No. 79 (singles) Rosie Johanson defeated No. 38 (singles) Salazar, 6-3, 6-2 in second singles. In fourth singles, Tritou lost to Chloe Gullickson, 6-1, 6-3. In the fifth singles match, UVA’s Hunter Bleser beat SU’s Hegab, 6-1, 6-3.

One Syracuse player won her individual singles match: Miranda Ramirez, in third singles. She took down Virginia’s Meghan Kelley, 7-6 (5), 6-3.

In both the first and sixth singles matches, SU took a one-set lead only to lose in three sets, with both Knutson and Libi Mesh winning their first sets 6-3 but failing to capitalize further.



Syracuse will compete at the ITA Team Indoor Championship next weekend in New Haven, Connecticut.
